The Reality of Being a Teacher

Someone really should provide a class on what teaching is REALLY like! This was my thought when I was struggling through my first year of teaching as a full time second grade teacher. It's disappointing really. It wasn't about experience in a classroom. With literally thousands of hours spent with teachers and students in the classroom between observations, student teaching, substituting and leave replacements over more than 5 years I had the experience. It was more about the things they don't tell you about. Like how to handle all of the paperwork. Dealing with angry parents. How to teach yourself the entire new curriculum when you are hired in a district you have never worked in before. The biggest one of them all-real time management!

It's been over five years since I first had that thought. And do you know what? I still often think it. So I decided to make a blog so that new (and possibly not-so-new) teachers like myself have someone to share their tips and tricks about how to not only survive, but succeed as a teacher in real life.

So welcome to my blog. Maybe now I can be the one to share the tips and tricks of teaching that I wish someone had shared with me!
